Art Decoration and Gardens

As part of the refurbishment of the future residence of the Crown Prince and Crown Princess at Amalienborg, the Realdania Foundation commissioned an art project for creating new Danish art for Frederik VIII’s Palace. The decoration project chiefly concerns the palace’s non-private rooms.

The architecturally integrated works of art were donated to the State upon completion of the palace. The sketches produced in connection with the project were donated to the KØS Museum of Art in Public Spaces, so the project can also be presented to the public in this manner.

Selection of artists

Ten Danish artists were selected for the project: Olafur Eliasson, Signe Guttormsen, Morten Schelde, John Kørner, Eske Kath, Kathrine Ærtebjerg, Kasper Bonnén, Tal R, Erik A. Frandsen and Jesper Christiansen.

The artists were selected by the Crown Prince and Crown Princess based on the advice of Poul Erik Tøjner, gallery owner and Director of Louisiana Museum for Modern Art, Mikael Andersen, gallery owner, Poul Scüleian, architect in Arkitema, and Per Thornit, Lord Chamberlain of the Royal Household. The choice of artists and the concept for the works of art were approved by the Heritage Agency of Denmark and the Danish Palace and Properties Agency.

Gardens

In addition to the refurbishment of buildings, new gardens were laid out behind the palace, a project which was also funded by Realdania. The gardens were designed by landscape architect Jacob Fischer.
