Energy
A large part of the refurbishment of Frederik VIII’s Palace will reduce the Royal Family’s use of energy.
As part of the refurbishment, architectural features like floors, attics and roof-slope spaces were insulated wherever possible. The palace’s 18th-century structure posed certain limitations – due in part to thick, solid walls, for instance. The palace windows were also refurbished.
Most of the technical installations in Frederik VIII’s Palace date from the 1920s and 1930s. The central heating system (heating pipes and radiators) was replaced, and the palace is furnished with new district heating to replace the previous central supply of steam. Underfloor heating has also been installed in parts of the palace.
The water supply was replaced to safeguard against burst pipes and water damage – and to ensure the durability of the construction works. The electrical installations were worn out and have been replaced throughout the palace. Similarly, new communication systems, IT (including internet connections), fireproofing and other technical systems were installed.
Depending on their nature, the energy-efficient investments are expected to pay for themselves in the course of two to ten years.
