The Bernstorff family was very interested in horticulture and the area where the nursery and orchard are now located was originally a large kitchen garden containing a wide variety of both Danish and foreign fruit and vegetables.
Between the beginning and middle of the 19th century Bernstorff Palace had various owners and the magnificent kitchen garden with its exotic plants fell into a state of partial dilapidation. Under King Christian IX the nursery and orchards experienced a renaissance, supplying the royal household with fruit and vegetables.
Fruit is still grown in greenhouses and outdoors in order to preserve the historical feel.
