A new playground in Frederiksberg Gardens

The new playground in Frederiksberg Gardens opened on 14 April 2008. It is on the site of an old kitchen garden that was abandoned in the early 20th century. The first playground was later built. Back then it was little more than a gravelled area, but this small haven for children has changed its appearance many times in the intervening period.

Total renovation

The winter months of 2007 saw the total renovation of the playground. With its bright colours and exciting materials, the new playground is both modern and stimulating. Its design will appeal most to the park’s youngest users, but children of all ages are welcome of course. There are hammocks, a butterfly that sprays water, gilded metal figures, a sandpit and climbing trees.
An adventure in the romantic gardens

The remodelling of the playground should be seen as part of the strategy for the castle gardens, which is aimed at preserving, developing and utilising them in cooperation with users. The new design attaches importance to the fact that the playground is part of the romantic landscape gardens. In line with the original intention behind the garden, all the figures in the playground are intended to arouse curiosity and set the scene for a social and recreational adventure. The playground also makes use of lots of different materials, giving children the physical experience of cold steel, hard granite and wood.

Voted Copenhagen’s best playground

In 2008 the playground came top in the “Best Playground” category on the AOK website. The other nominees from among the city’s 100 or more playgrounds were: Trafiklegepladsen (traffic playground), the playground in Østre Anlæg park, H.C. Ørstedsparken’s electronic playground and Naturcenter Vestamager.

A joint project

The playground was renovated by the Palaces and Properties Agency with a financial contribution from FrederiksbergFonden. The playground was planned by landscape architect Hjørdis Sørensen from Krat Landskabsarkitekter. Staff at LK Anlæg and Slotsholmsteknik helped to ensure that the project was realised.
The Palaces and Properties Agency hopes that the new playground design will give children and grown-ups plenty of happy times together.
