Christian V removed Christian IV's morally edifying suite of images from Rosenborg's Long Hall in 1698 and replaced them with 12 tapestries featuring motifs from the Scanian War of 1675-79. The new series was woven in Copenhagen from 1684-93 by the Flemish weaver Bernt van der Eichen. The series was taken down in 1917, restored and hung in the Great Hall of the newly-built third Christiansborg. The dimensions of the hall were made to fit the tapestries. The tapestries were finally returned to Rosenborg’s Great Hall in 1999, making way for Christiansborg’s own tapestry series. Here is a selection of the Rosenborg Tapestries.
The tapestries are on public display during Rosenborg’s opening hours.
