Esrum Abbey

Esrum Abbey is the remains of a vast Cistercian Abbey from around 1150 beautifully situated in the almost untouched medieval landscape of North Zealand near Gribskov and Esrum Lake. The existing building is just one wing of the original Abbey.

The Abbey was opened to the public in 1997 after painstaking restoration work which does full justice to the medieval architecture. The old Abbey building houses a permanent exhibition on the Cistercians at Esrum Abbey, as well as various temporary exhibitions on the golden age of monasteries in the Middle Ages and their decline as the Reformation swept across Europe.

The Abbot's Hall has frescoes from the Renaissance, and in the Abbey gardens a wide selection of medieval medicinal plants are cultivated. During the course of the year, one can attend lectures, concerts and theatre performances at Esrum Abbey.
