Gammel Dok (Old Dock)

The Gammel Dok Warehouse from 1882 has one of the most characteristic building profiles in Christianshavn. The building is named after Denmark's first dry-dock, which was built in 1739 between Eigtved's Warehouse and the Old Dock Warehouse. The warehouse accommodates the Danish Architecture Centre - a communication and development centre for architecture and urban culture. The Architecture Centre puts on many exhibitions and other open events in this historical setting. The Centre's neighbour in the Warehouse is the National Workshops for Arts and Crafts.

The modern square in front of the warehouse was opened in 1998, and the water level is a reminder of Christian VI's time when the navy's ships lay in dock right here. Excavation work carried out to create the square revealed the remains of the old dock.
